WRITER's STATEMENT

For the past 35 years I have been exploring the world of theater through movement and sound, writing plays performed as one-man shows or working in collaboration with colleagues such as Neil Intraub, Jonathan Wolken of Pilobolus Dance Theater and most recently with poet/author George Chieffet. “Walk Ins Welcome” is my first play for actors other than myself, the first play where I am the sole author and my first attempt to tell a story entirely through text, with movement and sound playing a supporting role.

It is heartening that my first foray into playwriting has been accepted into the 2017 NYC Thespis WinterFest Playwriting festival.

“Walk-Ins Welcome” evolved out of my desire to create something semi-autobiographical about my family’s experience living with a loved one’s approaching death. Taking inspiration from the book, “Awakenings” by Dr. Oliver Sacks, I created the character of Magda, who provides a brief reprieve (or “Awakening”) for the Kajecks family, who are exhausted and beleaguered by the prospect of the family matriarch’s impending death. Magda’s fortuitous appearance and continuing presence reminds them of what life once was, what it could have been and what it still can be. She is not a saint - she struggles with the same issues that plagued Danessa’s marriage - but her character is strong and her spirit longs for something better than settling for “what is”.     - Paul Rajeckas
